This is a DAT recording from 1997 which was originally recorded to be "nocturnal forest sounds" on the "Kampen" album, but it was never used as the tape was lost. For this album 2011 I thought of this awesome recording and asked my old friend and studio engineer Niclas Bäckar to look for it, with some help by Peter Asp they actually found it. I understand that the recording don't make much sense if you do not know the phenomena behind it.
I wanted this nocturnal forest sound for "Kampen", so me, Niclas Bäckar and his brother Fredrik M Bäckar went out on a winter night at midnight and put a microphone on a stand hooked to the DAT recorder in the middle of a clear-cut area in the forest some kilometers from town. We started to record and left the DAT recorder and the area for about 50 minutes. When we came back we noticed right away that it had only recorded about 7 minutes, the DAT tape must have been ca. 30 minutes long. So we went straight home to the Bäckar brothers' to listen to the tape, and we were amazed at what we heard. The first thing we noticed was that there appeared to be a creek sounding on the recording, a bit strange as it was in the middle of the winter, probably 20-30° C were we lived, and no one remembered seeing or hearing a creek in that clear-cut area when we were there. Ca. 1 minute in on the tape, after we had left the wooden area we heard footsteps, we heard how twigs on the ground were snapping, which means that it must have been something heavy; i.e. not a rabbit or dear. And about 5 minutes in on the recording we heard a weird voice moaning, and we knew right away this is not an animal; this is something else, something which was inspecting our microphone. Then all of a sudden this "something" threw a small rock on the microphone stand, and "something" turned off the recording. Amazed we hurried back to the same spot where we recorded it, ca. 2 am (!), and as we have heard footsteps we brought flashlights and we made sure that we only walked in our old footsteps in the snow or looked carefully on the ground in front of us so we didn't mess up potential footprints in the snow from this mysterious being on the recording. But, it showed no whatsoever footprints but ours, and we looked thoroughly around the area. This creeped us out and confirmed that this recording had captured a supernatural manifestation.
